KIWANIS CLUB OF TIERRASANTA

Information For A Prospective Member

WHEN AND WHERE WE MEET.
Mission Valley/Stadium
Holiday Inn, 3805 Murphy Canyon Road at 7:00 a.m. every
Wednesday throughout the year. Please call Deborah Foley
at 858-268-7218 for member information and to attend a
meeting, or just show up - we are a friendly group!

WHAT IS KIWANIS?  Each Kiwanis Club is chartered by Kiwanis International. Kiwanis
International has over 500,000 members in 80 countries. They are dedicated to serving the children of
the world, as well as improving their communities. A portion of our quarterly dues funds Kiwanis
International objectives, such as stamping out global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). Please see
www.kiwanis.org for more information.

WHAT WE DO AT CLUB MEETINGS. 7:00-7:15 a.m. Meetings open with a few minutes of
socializing, the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag, a patriotic song, a Thought for the Day and an
Invocation. Breakfast is served buffet style. From 7:15-7:30 a.m. there are announcements, reports
and some fun. From 7:30-8:00 a.m. we offer a program on contemporary issues, usually with an
outside speaker. Our City Councilman is a member and speaks to us on community issues about three
times per year.

HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST YOU? There is a one-time membership fee of $50. Trimester dues
are $50/$50/$40 and meals are an additional $160 ($10.00/meeting), or on a pay as you go basis. We
have a period each meeting for “happy and sad dollars” where members relate trips, family events,
and other commentary. Each week there are ticket sales at the door and a drawing for the
accumulated money in the pot. The person who wins the draw becomes the Kiwanian Of the Day
(KOD) for the next week and can exact light fines or pose quiz questions before introducing the
speaker.

Note: All funds raised by Kiwanis community events are returned to Tierrasanta/Murphy Canyon
schools, organizations and youth groups (roughly $30,000 per year). Funds from dues, drawings,
happy dollars, and fines are used to fund the club’s administrative costs.

HOW WOULD YOU BE INDUCTED? An informal indoctrination meeting will provide an overview
of Kiwanis, its history, and its goals. Following that, in a simple but dignified ceremony, you will be
introduced to the club and welcomed to the Kiwanis family.

WHAT WE WOULD EXPECT OF YOU AS A MEMBER. Commitment of some of your time to
our fund raising activities during the year. Regular attendance at Club meetings, personal sponsorship
of a new member, and acceptance of full responsibility inherent in a committee assignment or an
office to which you might be elected.

WHAT WE WILL PROMISE YOU.  The opportunity to share your experience, your knowledge,
your time, and your love of people in service to your community and its citizens. The prestige of
Kiwanis Membership, plus fun, fellowship, and evidence of true friendship every time you meet with
us. Add to that an opportunity for personal growth, and increased knowledge of what is going on in
your community. Kiwanis membership provides you the ability to give service back to your
community and make it better place to live and work.

HOW OUR CLUB SERVES THE COMMUNITY AND ITS YOUTH. Sponsorship of: Builders
Club at Farb Middle School, and De Portola Middle School; the Key Club at Serra
High School; presentation of Hope of America awards and plaques to outstanding students of our
sponsored schools; a four-year Vernon T. Bowman scholarship ($1,000 per year), a one-year Tom
Cherniss scholarship ($2,000), and a one-year George Paluso scholarship($1,000) to selected Serra
High School seniors. In summary, numerous youth and community service projects that improve the
quality of life (Oktoberfest, High School Basketball Tournament, Voices For Children, Rebuilding
Together, Patriot’s Day Parade, Children’s Hospital Mile of Quarters).

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES.  About three times a year the club or a member sponsors a get together. It
may be dinner out, a holiday celebration, a ball game, a play or a concert. Also, Division 21 that
consists of several clubs has periodic events like wine tasting, a Bar B Q or fund-raisers that members
can attend. It is a great way to get out and meet new people in our community.

WHAT WE HOPE YOU WILL DO. Attend at least two breakfast Club Meetings as a guest of our
Club. And then say "YES" when we invite you to become a member.
